Book Review: The Four Winds

The book I am reviewing today is The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, who personally is my favorite author and where I get a lot of my inspiration from. Let’s get into it.

The story is about Elsa a sickly girl who comes from a rich family who can’t stand her. Elsa’s sisters are married with children, but her parents make her out to be very ugly and sickly who will never marry.

One glorious day, Elsa had enough and decided she had enough of being treated so poorly so she went to a speak easy. Oh and before I forget, this takes place in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. Anyway, Elsa tries to go to the speak easy and she wasn’t allowed in because her father was a head honcho in town and everyone was afraid of him, so they knew if she was let in, they would be in trouble. Elsa decided to walk the streets alone in the night and meets Rafe. He seems like a great guy and Elsa finds him very attractive. They end up sleeping together and of course Elsa ends up being pregnant. Her parents take her to Rafe’s house and drop her at their doorstep and leave her there to deal with.

The parents of Rafe are sweet and hard working farmers. They have built land for themselves after coming over from Italy. They are very devout catholic and so Rafe and Elsa were to be married immediately.

When Elsa had her baby girl Loreda, she was so happy. She always wanted to be a mother. As the years went by Rafe became more and more depressed. They had another baby, which was a boy named Anthony (Ant). However, his parents treated Elsa like the daughter they never had. One morning they woke up from one of there terrible dust storms they had in Texas and Rafe was gone. Loreda blamed Elsa because Rafe wanted to go to California to start a new life.

Years went by and Elsa wasn’t going to leave but then Anthony got really sick from dust pneumonia. She knew she had to make a choice and took her two kids and went to California. When they arrived, they were met with torture and no money. It was devastating from the moment they got there. Elsa tried to remain strong but it was hard.

In the end, she met Jack who was a communist who wanted to stick up for the migrants. They weren’t getting equal pay or a place to live. Jack and Elsa ended up together, but she eventually died from a gun shot would due to protesting.

Here is what I think about this book:

The book is full of drama, full of smiles, full of laugher, and full of tears.

I loved this book so much for many reasons, but I couldn’t believe the terrible way people had to endure through the Great Depression. It makes me look at things in a completely different way.

Elsa was a strong brave character. She was full of life and she loved her children more than anything. She would do anything for them. It was very refreshing.

Loreda was brave and full of fire. She had so much passion and so much fight.

Ant was a child, but he always stayed by their side. He would say he wasn’t a baby and he would put on a brave face.

I give this book 4 out 4 stars. I loved it!

Book Promo

Hey there my fellow readers!

I wanted to let you know that starting tomorrow 2/1 thru 2/3, I will be doing a FREE book promo for my novel From Within on Kindle. The reason for this decision is because I finally finished the sequel which is called Forward to the Past. It will be out next week sometime, if I’m lucky sooner then that.

Please share and pass this around! I can’t wait for this book to come out. I’ve been working on it for awhile and at times it was super hard. My mind would go blank and then I couldn’t write for awhile. I always take a break for a little bit if something like that happens to me.

I’ll give you a little sneak peak into what to expect:

Bianca Yates, who is the daughter of Chelsea can see spirits from the time she is born. When she graduates, she moves to San Diego to live with her grandmother. She falls in love with a guy who actually has the same gift as she does. They stumble upon a portal and  they jump in not knowing to expect…

That’s all I’m going to give you. It’s pretty different then the first one but it ties in together.

Thanks everyone for the support!

Birthdays…

I love birthdays, I don’t care what anyone says. I know some people who hate them but I love them. Another year older and little more wiser. They just make me feel special. My birthday was yesterday and it was a wonderful day.

I took off from work to get a massage with my mama which was great! I really needed it. My husband treated me to some shopping and then we went out to dinner. While at dinner I received some fantastic news that an agent is requesting my work. I’m not going to get my hopes up but hey it’s finally nice to get recognized . I wrote my first book almost a year ago and wrote my second book about six months after that. The third book (which is the sequel to the second) is taking a little bit longer due to personal issues. It’s getting there, I’m a little over halfway done.

Anyways as I’m distracted by all that I just wanted to say birthdays are amazing. It means you made it another year and you have another year to look forward to. I know people always say “I’m getting old” well no shit, that’s the joys of growing and aging lol. Growing goes with experience I think.

I’m very appreciative to all the people that wished me a happy birthday yesterday. Friends and family and strangers 🙂 means a lot to me!

Feels Good

So last Saturday was the local author expo in Bensalem. It was another great experience! I sold about five books in the span of three hours. Few to a girls in the early twenties/late teens. And a couple to two of my aunts that came from out of state.

The people around me didn’t sell close to what I sold so it made me feel even better. I feel like it makes this experience much more special if they sold. However I feel like YA is the way to go. Girls love books it seems, which is great, and they want something juicy to read. My first novel Braver Than Yesterday seems to do a lot better in selling then From Within. Something about a girl being locked in a basement by her captor makes girls rush to buy. I don’t blame them, I love a mystery suspense novel. I changed up both of my novels so they can be YA. Who knows maybe that’s my calling.

I’m just really loving this whole experience. I am currently writing the sequel to From Within, and I’m over half done. I never thought that this would take off for me. I feel like I’m living my dream of writing. Publishing makes it even more amazing. People are out there reading my books and it feels great.

Hey

So I know it’s been a little while since I’ve wrote anything. Life has been super busy. There’s really nothing new going on. The event for the author expo is November 4th in Bensalem, PA which I will be a part of for signing and purchasing.

Also I did reformat both of my novels to the corrected versions. I’ve been taking a writing course and the teacher taught me the correct way to format. I let her read both books and she loved my second one. I think the first novel was a little too much for her, meaning sexually.

The sequel to From Within in going pretty well. I’m about half done which I’m excited about. I thought I would be done it by the time the expo came but that is impossible. I have yet to finish and edit it so I think I have a little ways to go.

Anyways I just wanted to check in. I’m actually about to head out to yoga. Hope everyone had a great Thursday!! Almost Friday!! Yay!!

Event

Well it’s official I’m doing another event at the author expo in Bensalem, PA. I received the email last night. I’m super excited. I think this is a great way to meet people and other authors. This event will take place in the beginning of November, as it becomes closer I’ll talk more about it. That is all I know so far.

I was hoping to finish the sequel to From Within but it’s taking longer then expected so I don’t think it will be ready unfortunately. Sometimes I get writers block so I need to take a break. I’m about half done but it still needs a lot of work.

Anyway super excited for the event!! I’ll talk more soon! Have a great Thursday everyone!

Happenings

I’m pretty excited because I registered for classes again. I’m still doing the writing which believe me I will never let go but I need to finish school. I have 5 classes remaining and then I will finally get my Bachelor’s in Psychology. There’s really not much I could do with that but at least I will have it.

I’ve been fighting with myself for a couple of years whether or not I should finish, I would’ve finished awhile ago but since I have to pay out of pocket it’s a little bit harder to.

In about a week and a half I will be going to the author expo that’s taken place locally. I feel like finally I may actually catch a break. I want to get out there as much as possible and it really is hard. I’m on Goodreads so please check me out there! Also if you’re on Facebook check out my page Here and like my page 🙂

New images

Hey there everyone!

I know it’s been awhile and hope you’re all doing well. I’ve been on vacation for the past week which I can say is pretty great. Haven’t relaxed this much in a long time.

I wanted to let you know my novels Braver Than Yesterday and From Within have new and improved covers. I figured they needed some revamping. The old covers weren’t doing the books any justice. I’m really excited to announce this so please check them out. I would be eternally grateful! Hope everyone is having a safe and fun summer. I’ll be talking to you soon. The third novel is turning out wonderful! Super stoked about it!
