Review # 12

I am reviewing the book Watch Me Disappear, by Janelle Brown.

I gave this book book 3 stars out of 4. It was a little hard to get into this book. I wasn’t until the end that I really started to get into it. Therefore, it took me months to finish.

SPOIL ALERT

This book is about Billie Flanagan, a wild child, but she was a woman. She was witty, fun, open, wild, wasn’t afraid of anything. She was married to her husband Johnathan and had a daughter Olive.

Billie has what seems like a life crisis, and starts to ponder her life. She was a free spirit, didn’t really like to be tied down, until she met her husband. However after many years, that didn’t last.

Billie goes off for a hike, leaving her husband and daughter at home. A few days go by and she never came home. Johnathan and Olive start to worry and they send a search party. The search party finds Billies shoe and she is presumed dead.

After a year goes by, Olive starts to have visions of her. She thinks she’s trying to tell her. She gives her clues and Olive tries and finds her. She’s convinced she is alive somewhere. She tells her father, but he dismisses her.

Johnathan feels like he’s going through a midlife crisis. He quits his job, and writes a memoir about his beloved wife. He finds himself however, finding clues and things hidden from him, like the fact that Billie had a daughter, from a previous marriage, that she neglected to tell him. He starts up a relationship with Billies best friend Harmony, and his daughter is skipping school and avoiding him all together. He feels like nothing is going right for him, until he comes across Billies laptop.

Johnathan can’t get into his wife’s computer, so he hands it off to his friend to crack the password. He hired a private investigator, because Johnathan realized a lot of money is taken from him.

Johnathan finds out an address of someone that was Billies computer of a man, or he thought was a man. He also found a letter that Billie wrote. It seemed to be intimate in his eyes. He thought she left him and Olive for another man. He hid the computer and didn’t want to see it anymore. He thought if she wanted to disappear and be with that man then let her.

Olive finds the laptop, and retrieves the address. She leaves school and takes a drive. When she pulls up to this address of Ryan, she knocks on the door and to her surprise she sees her mother looking back at her, except it wasn’t really her mother. It was Billies daughter.

When Jonathan found out that Olive skipped school, he knew that Olive found the laptop and went to that address. He pulled up, knocked on the door and there she was. A younger version of his wife.

Billie did hike up to the mountains, but she knew her life was over with Johnathan and Olive. She faked her own death by throwing a shoe into a rock, thinking she got stuck.

She hired a private investigator to get a new passport and to change her name. She left and started anew in Denmark.

I did like this book, but sometimes I think, she was really selfish. She just left her daughter and husband. She didn’t tell them about her other daughter. She kept so many things from them. She felt like she just needed to start over. That to me is a shitty mother, and really selfish. But hey, it’s fiction right haha it’s different then my other reads.

It’s here

Feels Good

So last Saturday was the local author expo in Bensalem. It was another great experience! I sold about five books in the span of three hours. Few to a girls in the early twenties/late teens. And a couple to two of my aunts that came from out of state.

The people around me didn’t sell close to what I sold so it made me feel even better. I feel like it makes this experience much more special if they sold. However I feel like YA is the way to go. Girls love books it seems, which is great, and they want something juicy to read. My first novel Braver Than Yesterday seems to do a lot better in selling then From Within. Something about a girl being locked in a basement by her captor makes girls rush to buy. I don’t blame them, I love a mystery suspense novel. I changed up both of my novels so they can be YA. Who knows maybe that’s my calling.

I’m just really loving this whole experience. I am currently writing the sequel to From Within, and I’m over half done. I never thought that this would take off for me. I feel like I’m living my dream of writing. Publishing makes it even more amazing. People are out there reading my books and it feels great.

Hey

So I know it’s been a little while since I’ve wrote anything. Life has been super busy. There’s really nothing new going on. The event for the author expo is November 4th in Bensalem, PA which I will be a part of for signing and purchasing.

Also I did reformat both of my novels to the corrected versions. I’ve been taking a writing course and the teacher taught me the correct way to format. I let her read both books and she loved my second one. I think the first novel was a little too much for her, meaning sexually.

The sequel to From Within in going pretty well. I’m about half done which I’m excited about. I thought I would be done it by the time the expo came but that is impossible. I have yet to finish and edit it so I think I have a little ways to go.

Anyways I just wanted to check in. I’m actually about to head out to yoga. Hope everyone had a great Thursday!! Almost Friday!! Yay!!

Event

Well it’s official I’m doing another event at the author expo in Bensalem, PA. I received the email last night. I’m super excited. I think this is a great way to meet people and other authors. This event will take place in the beginning of November, as it becomes closer I’ll talk more about it. That is all I know so far.

I was hoping to finish the sequel to From Within but it’s taking longer then expected so I don’t think it will be ready unfortunately. Sometimes I get writers block so I need to take a break. I’m about half done but it still needs a lot of work.

Anyway super excited for the event!! I’ll talk more soon! Have a great Thursday everyone!

Experience

This past weekend I was able to experience something that I was really excited about. There was a local author expo that took place in my area that I decided to be a part of. I thought it was a wonderful experience. I was able to connect with other authors and see how they ran the show since this was my first time. I was really ecstatic when it started and I had my first sale right away. The teenage girls seemed to track me down and read the back of my books and fell in love. You see there were these pamphlets that were given out to everyone about the authors and what genre the authors typically write about. I sold a few copies that day and felt even more special when I signed them. They were so excited and they asked for advice because some wanted to be future writers. I will be attending another expo in November that is even closer to where I live so I’m hoping more people will show up. This definitely made me want to write even more! I loved that it brought joy to people young and old.

Another thing I wanted to talk about is that I decided to do a giveaway on Goodreads for my novel Braver Than Yesterday. So starting on Thursday the giveaway will start and it will last about a month until October 14th.

I also decided for a limited time I wanted to do a promotion for Braver Than Yesterday the kindle version on Amazon. So if you click on the link you can download it for free for today only! I would love for those that download and read it to also review it. Reviews are always a plus 🙂

Also, one last thing the sequel to From Within is coming along and hoping to have it ready within the next month or so! Very excited for this one!

So a few pieces of news for you lovely people out there that love to read thrillers/suspense novels there you go! I hope you enjoy and thanks so much for the love and support.

Happenings

I’m pretty excited because I registered for classes again. I’m still doing the writing which believe me I will never let go but I need to finish school. I have 5 classes remaining and then I will finally get my Bachelor’s in Psychology. There’s really not much I could do with that but at least I will have it.

I’ve been fighting with myself for a couple of years whether or not I should finish, I would’ve finished awhile ago but since I have to pay out of pocket it’s a little bit harder to.

In about a week and a half I will be going to the author expo that’s taken place locally. I feel like finally I may actually catch a break. I want to get out there as much as possible and it really is hard. I’m on Goodreads so please check me out there! Also if you’re on Facebook check out my page Here and like my page 🙂

The Perfect Ad

Writing the perfect ad for your book is hard. I’ve been trying to come up with something for both of my novels for an ad and to be honest I’m having a hard time because you want your book to sell. What sells your book? A very well thought out ad. Something that catches the eye and draws you in. I must’ve changed the ad a gazillion times to try and get it right in my ear. I would run it over and over with my husband and he’s like yea try this or yea that sounds good. It’s really hard but it needs to be done. It’s my lively hood so I want to do right by it.

My first novel has a lot of sex, rape, love, & lesbianism in it. I know some of that is controversial but hey it’s what’s on my mind. People like to read that shit!

My second novel is about a girl that dies and comes back to life seeing spirits. Nothing like the first one but I like different! Wait until the sequel comes out.

Hopefully the ads work for both on Goodreads. Look me up if you haven’t already.

Getting there

I know it's been a little while since I wrote anything but I have some things that are going on in my life. First off I am going to a local author expo where I'll bring copies of my two novels and I'll be meeting other authors. That is in September so I'm pretty excited about that!

Second the sequel to my book From Within is scheduled for the fall. It's going very well and I'm very excited for this one. It went a completely direction which I find to be really interesting. Sometimes you just let your mind wander and I think it turned out really well.

That's basically all this happening in the writing world. I am currently working on a new novel that is sort of different then my first two. But more in line with my first one. I think I'm more into the mystery/thriller genre.

If you're a Goodreads follower you should definitely check me out. It's under Melissa Rose Bushèy. Thanks for reading and for the support!
